Case Study
OneCub
Complex Data Privacy Architecture & Carbon Analytics UI
Executive Summary
Distilling dense financial data, carbon footprints, and privacy consent flows into clear, scannable visual dashboards.
OneCub is a Paris-based data analytics startup that empowers users to regain control over their digital footprint, carbon emissions, and personal online spending. The company engaged me as Lead Product Architect & UX Strategist to transform their legacy interface. I overhauled dense financial and carbon metrics (travel mileage, kg eq CO₂ calculations, and retail account integrations) into intuitive, humanised dashboards while designing transparent data privacy consent flows that built user trust.
Client Feedback
Sky knows exactly how startups operate and we have been able to talk at a very high level about our tech and product requirements. Sky made strong UX propositions and worked closely with us to create a great product.
The Challenge
Overcoming information overload & privacy hesitation
The legacy OneCub dashboard suffered from cluttered navigation, wall-of-text explanations, and unorganised metrics. Users struggled to quickly parse their environmental impact (kg eq CO₂) versus spending categories. Furthermore, connecting private email and shopping accounts required friction-free privacy guarantees and clear consent UX.
How do you simplify complex carbon transactions and regulatory privacy consent flows into clear, visual dashboards without overwhelming consumers?
Data Visualisation & Dashboard Redesign
I restructured the legacy interface into a modular dashboard featuring high-contrast stat cards, clear categorical breakdowns (Shopping, Travel, Sport), and peer benchmarks:
- Data Simplification: Replaced text-heavy blocks with scannable metric cards and clear visual hierarchy.
- Modular Category Cards: Designed intuitive metric panels comparing personal consumption directly against community averages (e.g., 3,195 km distance vs. average 1,945 km).
- Carbon Analytics UI: Prominently displayed total carbon impact (10 kg eq CO₂) alongside per-kilometre environmental breakdowns.
Privacy Architecture & Data Connection UX
To maximize onboarding conversion and ensure privacy compliance, I architected a transparent 3-step data sync flow:
Fast account creation supported by explicit privacy guarantees and data handling disclosures.
Visual connection matrix supporting major retail and travel platforms (Amazon, eBay, Cdiscount, UEFA, SNCF).
Automated scanning interface reassuring users regarding end-to-end data encryption and privacy controls.
Strategic Takeaways
Key learnings from the build
Data Humanisation
Translating complex carbon calculations into relatable units (kg eq CO₂ per km) drives consumer comprehension and active retention.
Trust-Centric Consent UX
Breaking down complex regulatory and privacy consent flows into clear, incremental steps increases setup conversion and platform trust.
Peer Benchmarking
Comparing personal carbon footprint metrics directly against community averages provides immediate context and drives behavioral change.
