Case Study
Styleicona
Mobile Discovery & Retail Innovation
Executive Summary
Empowering young fashion enthusiasts with real-time crowd-sourced advice.
Styleicona was an innovative social shopping platform designed to create an engaging fashion community for Gen-Z and Millennial shoppers (aged 13–24). Backed by retail accelerator TrueStart with £90k in VC seed funding, the platform empowered everyday shoppers, "the girl next door" rather than traditional models, to share real-time daily outfits (OOTDs), receive instant crowd-sourced fashion advice while shopping in-store, and foster a healthier, positive body image. Launched on the iOS App Store, Styleicona bridged the physical fitting room experience with digital community validation, high-engagement influencer partnerships, and actionable B2B retail insights.
Impact at a Glance (Soft Launch Milestones)

Real-world fashion posts generated by authentic, everyday shoppers.
High-intent interaction data covering major high-street brands including Topshop, Primark, and New Look.
The Challenge
Solving in-store purchase hesitation
Shoppers frequently experience purchase hesitation inside fitting rooms, lacking instant, honest feedback from peers. At the same time, traditional social fashion was dominated by aspirational influencers and polished models, creating disconnect and body image pressures.
How do you create an inclusive, mobile-first social experience that gives shoppers instant confidence in the fitting room while capturing valuable real-time intent data for retail brands?
Community Validation
In their own words
Core Product Architecture & MVP Feature Set
The iOS app was architected to reduce friction between physically trying on clothes and receiving instant social validation:
- Instant In-Store Polling: Enabled users to snap photos in fitting rooms, tag items, and create quick community polls ("Buy this outfit?") for rapid feedback.
- Community & Compatibility Feed: Built discovery mechanisms that connected shoppers with compatible "fashionmates" sharing similar styles and body types.
- Personalised Digital Stylebook: Provided tools for saving favourite looks, building curated outfits, and browsing an infinite stream of real-world inspiration.
- Location-Based Discovery: Integrated geotagged feeds allowing users to explore popular looks pinned to specific physical stores and shopping centres.
Physical Activation & Creator Partnerships
To launch the product and build organic adoption among young female fashion enthusiasts, we combined physical shopping centre activations with targeted influencer campaigns:
- Land Securities & Trinity Leeds Campaign: Partnered with UK commercial property giant Land Securities to run an interactive launch campaign at Trinity Leeds shopping centre featuring large-format digital displays and live competitions.
- YouTube Creator Integration: Coordinated shopping sprees and video content with prominent YouTube creators (including Becca Rose, Helen Melonlady, and Tasha Green) to drive downloads among the target audience.
- In-Mall Kiosks & Contests: Promoted live app usage in physical retail environments with incentives like a £500 shopping voucher competition.
B2B Retail Insights & Venture Journey
Beyond consumer engagement, Styleicona was engineered as a data collection engine for major retail brands, closing the loop between fitting room activity and ultimate sales conversions.
Captured real-time data on items taken into fitting rooms but not yet purchased, offering retailers visibility into product consideration and fit feedback.
Tracked over 5,000 organic brand submissions across top high-street retailers like Topshop, Primark, and New Look to measure high-intent brand affinity.
Backed by retail accelerator TrueStart (£90k seed), the project proved the commercial viability of crowd-sourced fashion validation and physical-to-digital retail engagement.

Key learnings from the launch
Bridging Physical & Digital UX
Designing mobile touchpoints that complement real-world physical behaviours (like in-store shopping) creates immediate utility and high user engagement.
Authenticity Drives Retention
Prioritising relatable, everyday creators over polished influencers fosters inclusive environments and significantly boosts peer-to-peer feedback density.
User Data as B2B Value
Structuring consumer interactions around natural behaviours (tagging, voting) unlocks pre-purchase intent data that is highly valuable to enterprise partners.
